Is God using a Mormon to rally the church?

Glenn Beck’s rhetoric of late has sounded as theological as it does political. Recently Glenn has set his sights on Israel is the cornerstone for the future of humanity. Glenn is leading a trip to Jerusalem to take a stand for the country of Israel. Considering his recent statements about the 12th Imam, it appears Glenn is convinced that the Islamic world, especially Iran, is poised for an attempt to obliterate Israel. Since the western world, especially the USA, has downplayed its support for Israel in the recent months, Glenn has decided to do something about it himself. Glenn is leading a rally in Jerusalem this summer and he is inviting people to join him. Here is what is on Glenn’s website:

“I invite you to join me in Israel this summer to stand together and show the world what living a life of faith and honor really means. I invite you to join me in my quest to Restore Courage,” Glenn said. On radio, Glenn said, “We have gone to the capitals of our states and to the capitals of our government. We have talked to all the power brokers. The only power broker, the only seat of government that can and will solve this problem with or without us is God. It is time to return inside the walls that surround Jerusalem and stand with people of all faiths, all around the world.”(www.glennbeck.com/2011/05/16/coming-this-summer-restoring-courage-in-israel/)

Here is Glenn Beck, the Mormon (www.glennbeckmormon.com), calling upon the people of the world (but really the people of the USA) of all faiths (but really the Christians) to stand up for the state of Israel (but really the Jews) against the oppression of evil (but really the Muslims). Does this not sound more like something we would hear from our pulpits rather than our radios? Does Glenn Beck not sound more like a preacher rather than a political analyst?

Leaving behind whether or not we actually believe what Glenn is saying, I have a question for us. Could it be that God is using a Mormon to rally the church? Is God using a faith denounced by the Christian church as an instrument to awaken the Christian church? Or, if Glenn is right, is God using a Mormon to lead the Christian church?

The vast majority of listeners to Glenn Beck who are religious are conservative Christians. When Glenn talks of faith he is talking primarily to conservative Christians in the USA. So when Glenn leads a movement based on faith he is leading Christians. And when Glenn calls America to stand up for Israel he is calling Christians. And when Glenn takes a trip to Jerusalem to rally for courage he is taking Christians.

So how is it that a Mormon is leading the rallying cry for Christians to stand up for Israel? Whether he’s right or wrong, he is certainly trying to lead the American church.
