This is pretty awesome. I highly recommend this read. Who would have thought that Bono could articulate the cause of Christ so clearly?!

This is fabulous! Thanks for sharing. Loved the quote:
Bono: There’s nothing hippie about my picture of Christ. The Gospels paint a picture of a very demanding, sometimes divisive love, but love it is. I accept the Old Testament as more of an action movie: blood, car chases, evacuations, a lot of special effects, seas dividing, mass murder, adultery. The children of God are running amok, wayward. Maybe that’s why they’re so relatable. But the way we would see it, those of us who are trying to figure out our Christian conundrum, is that the God of the Old Testament is like the journey from stern father to friend. When you’re a child, you need clear directions and some strict rules. But with Christ, we have access in a one-to-one relationship, for, as in the Old Testament, it was more one of worship and awe, a vertical relationship. The New Testament, on the other hand, we look across at a Jesus who looks familiar, horizontal. The combination is what makes the Cross.

Sorry, but ‘Bono’ understanding of Christ differs significantly from the New Testament account and seems to ignore many of Christ’s own statements such as ‘ I didn’t come to undo the law, but to fulfill the law’ and also seems to undermine the Divinity of Christ. Yes, He was fully man, but He was also fully God, and as such demands the same reverence and respect and yes Jesus even confronted those who called themselves religious by addressing the issues of the heart, but while he often claimed Divinity and equality with God, He never condemned people, but always, always, confronted their Sin nature but demanding that we repent and follow Him and sin no more….I liked much of Bono’s music, but his language and actions and misapplication of scripture shows a knew for growth and teaching, not being looked at as a example of Christ-likeness. The Old Testament speaks about Christ in many places through pictures in words and we should always look for that ‘scarlet thread’ in every book of scripture, Old or New Testament..
Just my thoughts and opinions….God Bless.

A couple of thoughts.
I didn’t read Bono’s comments expecting his entire Christology. What I read was right and I was surprised to hear it coming from his mouth.
He is talking to a non-believer so I don’t know how much of his language is modified so that the non-believer can understand. It is possible that he is searching for common ground with the interviewer. If so, he succeeded.
People change and grow over time. I don’t know Bono personally so I don’t know if he is a true disciple. I know that I have said and done things in my youth that I’m embarrassed of now. I know that people could point to lots of my actions and claim I’m not a very good Christian. I’m simply evaluating his words in this interview and the face value, I find, to be quite engaging.
For the Kingdom!!

We all have done things that we are ashamed of and rightly so…Floating the ‘f’ bomb within the framework of speaking about humanitarian causes is certainly not the examples you look for in ‘celebrity’ Christianity….I would look to someone like yourself or possibly Mother Teresa when talking giving of oneself and resources for a cause bigger than one’s self…In fact, my hero’s or examples which have challenged me during my 38 of being Christian it would be John MacArthur, Charles Stanley, Adrian Rogers, Billy Graham or Bill Bright…These men are the true ‘celebrities’ in the Christian world…Bono, if he is in fact a believer, needs to sit under some good teaching before we attempt to label him an adequate person who truly understands the gospel and it’s meaning…
In the mean time, obviously we should pray for him and that he truly understands first and foremost that he is a sinner in need of Saviour, because only then do we truly understand how amazing Grace truly is!!!!
